AI in Education: Shaping the Classroom of Tomorrow - Iceland 2025
From April 7th to April 13th, 2025, the two adventurous educators Mag.a Ilse Prenn and Mag. Bernd Fiechtl from BG/BRG Judenburg embarked on an exciting journey to Iceland for the course "AI in Education: Shaping the Classroom of Tomorrow." This seven-day program was packed with learning, exploration, and a dash of Icelandic magic, all aimed at integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into educational settings.
This professional training took place within the framwork of the Erasmus+ Programme 2021-2025. This training meets several main goals of the EU-school-strategy, namely further proffessional training and life-long-learning for teachers and digitalisaition and implementation of digital skills at school.
The program of the training covered the following activities:
Day 1: Group Welcome The adventure kicked off with a warm welcome and some icebreaking activities that got everyone moving and grooving. Participants were introduced to the STPM concept and courses, and the week ahead was laid out with a mix of anticipation and excitement.
Day 2: Introduction to AI, Prompting, and Multimedia Tools Day two was all about diving into the world of AI. Participants learned about the basics of AI and its impact on education, with hands-on activities that made AI prompting for language models feel like second nature. The session also introduced some cool text-to-image and text-to-video tools, sparking creativity and innovation.
Day 3: Choose-Your-Own-Adventure Creation On the third day, it was time to get creative! Educators explored the concept of crafting interactive adventures for their students. They experimented with various storytelling platforms and strategies to create engaging narratives. By the end of the day, everyone had a unique adventure story enhanced with AI-generated visuals.
Day 4: Class and Culture Wednesday was a day of cultural immersion. The group visited one of Reykjavík's newest schools, getting a firsthand look at the Icelandic education system. The tour included a presentation and a guided walk through the classrooms and communal areas, showcasing innovative teaching practices and the importance of outdoor and practical subjects.
Day 5: Sharing Practices and AI Assistants Thursday was all about sharing and learning from each other. Participants presented their successful teaching methods and engaged in lively group discussions. The focus was on innovative practices and the use of AI assistants to enhance teaching. The collaborative environment was buzzing with ideas and inspiration.
Day 6: Final Session, Evaluation, and Vision Planning The final day was dedicated to wrapping up the course and looking ahead. Participants reflected on their learning, evaluated their progress, and set personal and professional goals for integrating AI into their teaching environments. The session included discussions on advanced AI applications and effective teaching without textbooks.
Day 7: Relax and Reflect The week concluded with a relaxing visit to a local thermal swimming pool and hot tubs. This Icelandic well-being activity was the perfect way to unwind, reflect on the week's experiences, and bond with fellow educators. No mobiles or screens allowed—just pure relaxation and future planning.
Throughout the course, the teachers of the BG/BRG Judenburg also enjoyed optional activities like the Golden Circle Tour, a visit to the Icelandic Lagoon, and a cultural evening featuring local foods, music, and team-building games. These activities added an extra layer of fun and camaraderie to the experience.
This enriching adventure not only broadened the participants' understanding of AI in education but also fostered a sense of community and collaboration among educators from different backgrounds. The knowledge and insights gained from this course will undoubtedly shape the future of teaching at BG/BRG Judenburg, paving the way for innovative and effective educational practices.
