First Glimpse of Plastica's Revenge
Making of the comic book
This project came about at the initiative of Sint Gummarus College in Lier, Belgium.
They launched an Erasmus project (2022-1-BE02-KA220-SCH-000087366) in cooperation with schools from five other countries: Aruba (Colegio Arubano), Austria (Bundesgymnasium Judenburg), Croatia
(OS TomaSa Goriéanca), Portugal (Pegoes Canha e Santo Isidro), Spain (Colegio Montessori). A challenging schedule was outlined with exchanges in all countries, spread over two school years.
Plastic Waste as general theme
The schools together chose the theme “RETHINK SINGLE-USE PLASTICS”, and decided to roll it out during the exchanges. To highlight this theme in a fun way, and to
leave something tangible behind, the schools decided to develop a comic strip with the students. For this, they turned to the professional comic service providers of Striptekenaargezocht.be (Sprengers Communicatiebureau), who enlisted illustrator Kristof Fagard.
Student co-creation
The students played an active role in every step of creating the comic strip. After the rough storyline was established, the exchange students in Austria came up with the characters. In Croatia, the story was fully developed, and during the exchange in Portugal the students wrote the dialogues. In Spain, students elaborated on their own sustainability goals and goals of the schools themselves. In Aruba, they brainstormed about the title ‘of the book, and prepared interviews with the illustrator and ‘companies. Finally, in Belgium, everything was finalized for the” launch of the comic.
