European Exchange Programme "Deplastify the Planet" Culminates in Lier
From 15th April – 22nd April 2024, 9 students from the BG/BRG Judenburg along with their teachers Mag. Ilse Prenn, Mag. Walter Aschbcher and Mag. Bernd Fiechtl, participated in the 6th student exchange in Lier in Belgium. The partner school Sint Gummaruscollege Lier invited a total of 30 partner students to participate in 6th and last students’ exchange as part of the Erasmus+ project "Deplastify the Planet" (https://letschallengethefu.wixsite.com/deplastifytheplanet1/the-partners ). The exchange students were all accommodated with host families, where they could gather social and cultural impressions and experience Belgian hospitality.

This cooperation was initiated to promote environmental knowledge and awareness among teachers and students regarding plastic waste. The main priority of this project is environmental protection, particularly through the reduction of plastic and plastic waste. Since 2022, the partners have been working on measures to develop an environmentally friendly school and have exchanged and collected experiences and effective methods for reducing plastic waste.
As part of this project, a comic book was created by the students in cooperation with a Belgian publisher. During the first meeting in Austria, the characters and comic figures were created. Furthermore, initial drafts for the plot and the environmental challenges that the heroes face were sketched out. In subsequent meetings in Croatia, Portugal, Spain, and Aruba, in collaboration with the Belgian publisher, the plot and characters were finalized. The comic book will have a print run of several thousand copies.
In a concerted effort to combat the global issue of single-use plastics, students from various countries participated in the "Deplastify the Planet" exchange program hosted by Sint-Gummaruscollege in Lier, Belgium. From April 15th to April 22nd, 2024, young minds from Aruba, Croatia, Austria, Portugal, and Spain convened for an intensive and enlightening series of activities aimed at raising awareness and finding solutions to the pervasive problem of plastic pollution.
The program kicked off with the arrival of Team Aruba, warmly welcomed by host families. As the Aruban students integrated into classes at Sint-Gummaruscollege, anticipation grew for the arrival of Teams Austria, Croatia, Spain, and Portugal on Monday, April 15th.
The schedule was packed with educational and engaging activities. On Tuesday, April 16th, after a welcome speech by the headmaster, Belgian students presented a timeline of past projects addressing single-use plastics. Ice-breaking games and workshops on marketing and plastic reduction strategies followed, fostering collaboration and idea exchange among participants.
A highlight of the program was the excursion to Brussels on Wednesday, April 17th, where students embarked on a photo search and comic book walk, culminating in a visit to the European Parliament. This firsthand exposure to European governance and cultural exchange was invaluable to the participants.
The exchange wasn't solely about sightseeing; it was also about action. On Thursday, April 18th, students engaged in a sponsor and clean-up tour, demonstrating their commitment to environmental stewardship. A notable event on this day was the launch of the comic book "Plastica's Revenge," the culmination of the students' creative efforts to spread awareness about plastic pollution. The launch event was attended by over 250 guests, including local officials and representatives from partner organizations.
Throughout the program, students worked tirelessly on the comic strip under the guidance of professionals, addressing the issue of single-use plastics with creativity and ingenuity. The publication, printed locally, will now be distributed across schools in Belgium and Europe, amplifying the message of environmental conservation.
As the week drew to a close, participants enjoyed cultural exploration and reflection, culminating in a farewell party on Sunday, April 21st, complete with Belgian fries and music. On Monday, April 22nd, with hearts full of memories and minds enriched with knowledge, all teams departed, each carrying with them a renewed commitment to "Deplastify the Planet" in their respective communities.
The exchange program exemplified the power of international collaboration in tackling pressing global issues, leaving a lasting impact on both participants and observers alike.
