4th Planet Earth Day at the BG/BRG Judenburg
On the 22nd April 2024 students of class 4c of the BG/BRG Judenburg celebrated the 4th Planet Earth Day and carried out several activities in order to make aware of environmental challenges of our society. Together with their teacher Mag.a Stefanie Hoffelner-Duer(chemistry/geography) they had prepared two different projects concerning plastic waste and plastic waste reduction.
Project 1: Plastic Pirates Go Europe
As in the year before the group participated again in the project “Plastic Pirates go Europe” This project was launched by the European Commission and has been introduced all over Europe. The Europe-wide introduction of plastic pirates will enable harmonised and standardised sampling in rivers throughout Europe. This helps massively expand the existing database about the pollution of European rivers, improve scientific understanding and knowledge among students and thus contribute to the development of systematic solutions for the prevention, reduction and elimination of marine and river pollution, especially from plastics.
By collecting plastic litter and uploading data on the litter students will analyse and thus students are helping to research environmental pollution near bodies of water. The same experimental set-up and work steps for all participating European teams will ensure that the data collected can be compared across Europe and will gradually become visible online on a map. On the one hand, the joint action is intended to raise awareness across Europe of the importance of rivers as common lifelines and for the protection of natural resources. On the other hand, the importance of international research co-operation is to be experienced together.

Project 2: Styrian Spring Clean-Up 2024
In order to raise awareness for the mass of waste people create one group of the students launched at the same day a river clean-up, supported by the Styrian regional government. The trend of carelessly discarding waste immediately after consumption and thus littering public spaces is still recognisable.
To counteract this behaviour, an annual a nationwide litter clean-up campaign has been organised every year since 2008. Broad sections of the Styrian population make an invaluable contribution with their Styria make an invaluable contribution to a clean Styria with their voluntary commitment.

These two activities were also carried out within the Erasmus+ KA2 project “Deplastify the Planet” and it was also the final activity within this project. During the last 2 years students and teachers of the BG/BRG Judenburg had participated in this project which focussed on environmental protection and green sustainability and the partnership pursued two main objectives:
· reduction of single use plastic
· increase of awareness of the impact of plastic waste
